The White family has been a transformational force in the Upstate of South Carolina for generations
John’s grandfather, William Rush White, began his career in law enforcement in 1924 with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Department. He joined the Spartanburg Police Department ten years later, serving as head of the vice squad, chief of detectives and finally chief of police, a position he held until his retirement in 1950. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, John’s father, John B. White, Sr., opened The Beacon Restaurant on Thanksgiving Day 1946 with a $1,700 investment from his military paychecks. Featured on “On the Road” with CBS’ Charles Kuralt and still located on the highway aptly named John B. White Sr. Boulevard, The Beacon served “world famous” sweet iced tea, chili-cheese-a-plenty and loaded banana splits, among other delectable dishes.
With the vision that “quality food, quantity and service will bring customers back,” White Sr. was also well known for his generosity of spirit and philanthropy, routinely helping people who couldn’t afford their rent and donating food to workers picking up litter on the city streets. He fed the community each year during his annual Christmas Breakfast, donated food to the hungry members of the military, and brought hot meals to feed countless first responders during emergency recovery efforts to assist the city and community. White Sr. was awarded the Order of the Palmetto in 1996, the highest civilian honor possible in the state of South Carolina.
Following in the large footsteps left by his grandfather and father, John B. White, Jr. has maintained the history of service to the nation and Upstate community established by the White family over 100 years ago. John became interested in law during his service in the United States Army. Following receipt of his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law, John worked as an attorney before opening his first practice in Spartanburg in the early 1990’s. Since then, John and his partners have been active community members, partnering with a variety of non-profits to improve the lives and futures of their Upstate neighbors.
